Hi Jen! It’s a naked cake style. I just put buttercream between the layers and had it go over the edges a bit and then when the cake is stacked I took an icing scraper to the sides and smoothed out the frosting. I hope that helps!

Hi Jennifer! You can try adding 1 Tbsp of lemon juice or vinegar to a dairy free milk. That should work ok!

I would love to bake it, but we can’t have buttermilk. Is there a dairy free substitute you could recommend? Thank you!

Hi Jen! No, but you can use hot water instead.

Love the look of this cake!!

Could plain yogurt be used as a substitute for the coffee?

Hi Thomas! Yes, you can just use hot water. You need to pour it into the egg mixture slowly, while whisking the eggs quickly. Incorporating it that way won’t scramble the eggs :).

I love the way that the outside colors look different than how the slices look. If you’re saying that the smeared gel is what gave it that affect, I like it. 🙂
