I wanted to make a square cake to go with the theme I was doing for Ryan’s birthday. All the previous cakes I’d made were round and I wanted to try something new. It’s surprisingly hard to find square cake pans, at least the kind I was looking for. It probably didn’t help that I was looking for them in discount stores because I refused to pay full price, but still… I finally managed to find a matching pair at Homesense but didn’t know I’d be in for a surprise when I got home.
The way they were packaged, I didn’t realize the bottoms of these pans were removable. I assume to make it easier to remove the cakes once they’re baked. Needless to say I was apprehensive about using them and worried that the batter would leak under the removable plate (especially since I bought them in a discount store!). The plate slid around before I put the batter in, and I was not confident that it would stay put.
I’m happy to say that the cakes were a success and the pans worked surprisingly well!
The cakes came out of the pans easily and were nice and smooth. Pretty much perfect :). I only wish they had sharper and not rounded corners to make decorating them easier (and nicer).
Overall, a success! See the final Mario cake here!
